Breaking News: Detroit Lions Quarterback Terminates Contract Amidst Contract Extension Talks
In a surprising turn of events, Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff has reportedly terminated his contract with the team amidst ongoing contract extension negotiations.
Goff, who has been instrumental in leading the Detroit Lions to the brink of their first-ever Super Bowl appearance, is set to play in Sunday’s NFC Championship Game against the San Francisco 49ers. However, amid the team’s playoff run, reports from NFL Network suggest that contract extension talks between Goff and the Lions were underway during the offseason.
According to sources, the proposed extension would have made Goff one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league. However, despite the promising negotiations, Goff has opted to terminate his current contract.
The quarterback currently has one year remaining on his existing four-year, $134 million contract extension, which he signed with the Los Angeles Rams in 2019. In the 2024 season, Goff was due to earn $26.9 million. After spending five seasons with the Rams, Goff was traded to the Lions in March 2021 as part of a deal involving fellow quarterback Matthew Stafford.
During the 2023 season, Goff delivered an outstanding performance, boasting a career-best 67.3 completion percentage. He threw for 4,575 yards, accumulating 30 touchdowns and only 12 interceptions. Goff’s stellar play has positioned him on the cusp of his second Super Bowl appearance, with his first coming in a 13-3 loss to the New England Patriots while playing for the Los Angeles Rams in 2019.
