Andy Reid sets timeline on retirement as Chiefs begin quest for historic three-peat
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is widely regarded as one of the greatest coaches in the history of the NFL. As he prepares for his 26th season as the head coach in the league, Reid has the opportunity to create history – with a Super Bowl three-peat.
Reid was a guest on The Athletic’s new podcast, “Scoop City,” hosted by NFL insider Dianna Russini and former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel. When asked how many more years he would like to coach in the NFL, the Chiefs HC left the decision in the hands of destiny. [From 42:10 mark onward]
“I don’t know,” Reid said. “I remember when my parents retired, I said, ‘How do you know it’s time to retire? I mean, you hit 65 and then you retire? I mean, what is it?’ They said ‘you’ll just know. You’ll know when it when it’s time to go.'”
Reid was then asked if he had pondered retirement and if he has ever been close to retiring. The 66-year-old head coach said that while he hasn’t thought about it, he definitely know’s he’s in the back end of his coaching career.
“I enjoy doing what I’m doing. I know I’m on the bottom side of this thing, and not on the top side of it. So it’s coming. But I don’t know when it is. And it’s a great place to coach and I’ve got good players. So I’ll be 71 at the end of this contract. And that seems like really old. So we’ll see where it all goes.”
Retirement takes back seat as Chiefs HC Andy Reid eyes history
Andy Reid is going no where. While there were retirement rumors, the Kansas City Chiefs head coach put them to bed by signing a multi-year contract extension this offseason. Reid will stay as the HC for the Chiefs through 2029.
Reid is coming off his second consecutive Super Bowl victory and his third Lombardi Trophy in five years. The Kansas City Chiefs head coach has cemented his spot among the pantheon of greatest NFL head coaches. He joins Bill Belichick, Chuck Noll, Joe Gibbs and Bill Walsh, to become the fifth head coach with three-or-more Super Bowl victories.
Reid has the second most playoff victories (26), trailing Belichick (31) by five, in the league history. Along side Belichick, Reid is also the only coach with over 200 wins and three Lombardi Trophies. Heading into the 2024 NFL season, the Chiefs head coach will have the opportunity to become the first head coach to win three consecutive Super Bowls.
