The 2024 WNBA season came to a close after the New York Liberty secured a WNBA title following a 67-62 Game 5 win over the Minnesota Lynx.
This season was one of the most successful years the league has seen, breaking many viewership and attendance records throughout. Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese was a big part of the WNBA’s increase in popularity, and her play on the court showed that she can have an impact for years to come.
Reese broke numerous records during her first season, but most notably, she passed former Los Angeles Sparks star Candace Parker for the most consecutive double-doubles in league history with 15.
In an email interview with Athlon Sports’ Thomas Neumann, the former LSU Tiger discussed her feelings on breaking the record of such an important figure in women’s basketball.
“I’m truly not focused on my individual accolades,” Reese commented. “I’m always focused on our team and what we need to do collectively to win.”

The Sky, as a whole, didn’t necessarily have the best season we have seen, as they missed the postseason entirely. After starting the year 10-14 and in prime position to make the playoffs, Chicago lost 13 of its last 16 contests, falling to 13-27 overall. As a result, the Sky let go of head coach Teresa Weatherspoon after just one season with the team.
Parker set the previous record of 12-straight double-doubles between the 2009 and 2010 seasons. Although the record is no longer hers, the former Tennessee Volunteers star has plenty more on her WNBA resume that will send her to the Basketball Hall of Fame in the future.
Parker spent most of her career in Los Angeles but also had brief stints with the Sky and the Las Vegas Aces. She won three WNBA championships during her career, including bringing Chicago its first-ever title. Parker also won two MVP awards and was named an All-Star seven times.
Along with the double-double record, Reese also broke the single-season rebounding record. But, with her year cut short due to a wrist injury, Aces forward A’ja Wilson stole the record away a few weeks later.
The 22-year-old averaged 13.6 points and a league-leading 13.1 rebounds per game in her first season with the Sky. She also made the All-Star team, helping Team WNBA upset Team USA.
