Caitlin Clark was one of the main attractions in the WNBA’s All-Star game between Team WNBA and the Olympic-bound Team USA. Led by All-Star Game MVP Arike Ogunbowale and rookies Angel Reese and Clark, Team WNBA dominated most of the matchup and took down Team USA, 117-109, at the Footprint Center in Phoenix.

Clark orchestrated the offense for Team WNBA throughout the matchup, tallying an All-Star rookie record of 10 assists, just one assist shy of the WNBA record of Sue Bird.

In the in-game interview, Clark was one of the players who was given the microphone for a brief talk with the commentators. While resting in the third quarter of the All-Star game, Clark expressed her desire to eclipse Bird’s record in one of the most hilarious moments of the All-Star game.

“Oh it’s Sue’s? I’m gonna break it she’s been talking crap all game, if it’s anybody else they can keep it but not Sue Bird,” Clark said while brimming with a smile.

It was Clark’s response after ESPN commentators informed her that she was just two assists away from Bird’s All-Star assist record, shortly after the WNBA legend was seen playfully chirping with the players during the game.

Sue Bird set the assists record in 2017. Clark also became the fourth player in WNBA history to record 10 assists in an All-Star game. Clark’s assists got her going in the All-Star matchup as she struggled to shoot the lights out, going 0-of-7 from the three-point line.

Clark fell short of breaking Bird’s record as she only had one more assist since the interview, which was a pass to fellow rookie Angel Reese inside the paint.

Nevertheless, Clark was instrumental in helping Team WNBA find good looks, especially Ogunbowale, who scored a game-high 34 points built off eight 3-pointers. In Team WNBA’s opening run in the second half, Clark assisted in three of the four baskets, including two by Ogwunbale, taking the momentum from the Olympians.

Caitlin Clark honors Sue Bird in post-All-Star game interviews

In the post-game interviews, Caitlin Clark mentioned WNBA great Sue Bird, who has clearly developed a friendship with the Indiana Fever rookie.

“That’s Sue’s record,” Clark said. “I can’t take that from her. That’s my homie.”

“But yeah, that’s all Sue, so let her have that,” she added.

Clark may have fallen short of the All-Star assist record, but she has already set the WNBA assists record in the regular season with 19 in a loss against the Dallas Wings, just three days before the All-Star festivities.

As the top vote-getter in the All-Star voting, Clark started the game for Team WNBA and played the second-most minutes for the team with 26.
