Indiana Fever rookie sensation Caitlin Clark playfully made fun of former collegiate teammate and fellow WNBA freshman Kate Martin. She kidded her ex-Iowa running mate for the “fitted look” she had when she visited the school while the WNBA is on a break.
Martin graced the training of the Hawkeyes on Wednesday and passionately spoke to the players about playing for the school and the sacrifices that have to go into it, highlighting:
“Why not show up every single day and work your a** off?”
The Iowa women’s basketball team shared Martin’s talk with the team on its official Instagram page. Check out the video below:
Caitlin Clark took the opportunity to roast her friend, sharing a video capture photo of Martin’s talk with the Iowa team on her IG story and amusingly captioning it with:
“Why are us so fitted? @katemartin”
What gives Kate Martin?
Caitlin Clark and Kate Martin had a lot of success playing together in Iowa, helping the Hawkeyes to back-to-back national championship games in their final two years.
Now in the WNBA, they continue to make a name for themselves with their respective teams.
Clark, the top overall pick in this year’s WNBA Draft, has been stellar for the Fever (11-15), leading the team in scoring with 17.1 points while also posting a league-high 8.2 assists. Her numbers also lead all rookies. For good measure, she is also tallying 5.8 rebounds and 1.5 steals in 36 minutes of play.
For her part, while seeing limited action for the defending WNBA champions Las Vegas Aces (16-8), Martin (3.6 ppg, 2 rpg and 1.2 apg in 15 mpg) remains a key personnel in the team’s rotation and is among the popular players in the organization for her high basketball IQ and no-nonsense approach to the game.
Caitlin Clark has a lot of respect for Kate Martin’s game
Seeing firsthand how her former collegiate teammate works, Caitlin Clark said she has a lot of respect for the game of Kate Martin and fully supports her despite now playing in separate teams in the WNBA.
Indiana Fever’s Clark shared this ahead of their game earlier this month against Martin and the two-time defending league champions Las Vegas Aces, highlighting the tremendous work ethic that her ex-Iowa running mate has and how she gives added dimension to the game of the Aces.
She said:
“It’s kind of rare at the pro level what she can bring to a team, but she’s one of those people that’s not gonna care if she scores, not gonna care how many rebounds she has or how many assists she has.
“She’s gonna come in and play as hard as she possibly gonna, gonna be the best teammate she can be and those are the type of people you want in your locker room.”
In their game on July 2, Martin and the Aces won, 88-69.
