Caleb Williams was compared to Patrick Mahomes (Source: Getty)
Caleb Williams has only played in one preseason game, but the Chicago Bears quarterback is already creating massive expectations not only from Bears fans but from the entire NFL, especially after his exhibition against the Cincinnati Bengals.
As such, even Tyreek Hill decided to jump on the bandwagon. The Miami Dolphins wide receiver, who has won one ring and spent the first part of his career with the Kansas City Chiefs, gave Williams the ultimate compliment regarding quarterbacks: Hill compared him to his former teammate Patrick Mahomes.
Although the rookie was happy to hear the comparison, he downplayed the subject, saying that his biggest focus had much more to do with the team than just the individual:
“It’s respect,” Williams said. “It’s cool and all, but I’m Caleb Williams. Patrick Mahomes is Patrick Mahomes. Tyreek Hill is Tyreek Hill. Much love to them and things like that. [I’ve] met ’em, talked to ’em both, things like that. But we’re here to win games for the Chicago Bears. Da Bears.”
Both quarterbacks did special things on Saturday that enticed their fanbases: Williams had an excellent half with a fantastic deep ball to Rome Odunze, while Mahomes finally threw a behind-the-back pass in the NFL.
Is Caleb Williams’ potential getting a bit overrated?
Caleb Williams is not overrated. He was not overrated as a prospect and he deserves all the hype that has come since the Bears spent the first-overall pick on him. Chicago now finally has a quarterback it can trust.
Williams is the type of quarterback molded to perfection, always thought of as the type everyone wants to have: five-star recruit coming out of high school, college football star, Heisman Trophy winner, first pick in the NFL draft. He’s used to the feeling of being the star and will have to live with that responsibility on the biggest stage.
Anyone who sees the tapes of No. 13 immediately notices that there’s something special there. He has a fantastic arm: the ball explodes out of his hand, and he’s capable of making all the throws he will need in the NFL with impressive ease. Even when the throwing window isn’t the biggest, the ball is there in the right spot for the receiver to have a chance to make the catch.
