Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker raised a major issue in respone to a group of drag queens’ performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony on Friday.

Every four years, the best of the best in the world gather for the Olympics, patriotic gear in hand, to prove their supremacy in their respective sport, with Paris being the venue this time. The opening ceremony on the River Seine saw Celine Dion produce a performance from the Eiffel Tower. However, not everyone was happy with the four-hour-long opening ceremony, least of all Chiefs kicker Butker.

Butker has been in the news more often than not of late. This time, the three-time Super Bowl champion took issue with a performance from a group of drag queens in the opening ceremony that appeared to depict a rendition of the Last Supper.

Butker posted an Instagram story saying:

“This is crazy.”

The Chiefs kicker added another little note, quoting from the Bible:

“Be not deceived, God is not mocked.”

Why Harrison Butker has been in the news in recent months

No, it didn’t start when the Chiefs wrapped up a third Super Bowl triumph in five years to signal the start of a dynasty. Butker’s controversy began in May at the Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas, where he was invited to deliver a commencement speech.

That speech went sideways when Butker suggested most women would find more joy in motherhood rather than a professional career:

“Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.”

Butker’s comments on IVF, where he said “There is nothing natural about Catholic birth control” also raised more than a few eyebrows.

The Chiefs kicker faced immense backlash after his commencement speech, more recently when Serena and Venus Williams took a shot at him at the ESPYs. Venus Williams said:

“Go ahead, and enjoy women’s sports like you would any other sports, because they are sports. … except you, Harrison Butker. We don’t need you at all.”

After Butker’s commencement speech, Colin Kaepernick also suggested that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was being a little hypocritical by not taking action against the Chiefs kicker.
