Despite Winning More Rings Than Michael Jordan, Lakers Legend Refuses to Use Major Flex in Front of Corporate America

One of the earliest MJ memories for Robert Horry was an on-court exchange when both were called out for traveling. Big Shot Rob was a “young fella” then, and was shaking his head with a “You’re right” when MJ pointed out Horry for his smarts for replicating the same move as MJ. But that’s about it when it comes to copying Michael Jordan.

Horry is unlike Michael Jordan and Bill Russell who have occasionally displayed their rings as symbols of their accomplishments. For Horry—who has one more than Jordan when it comes to NBA championships, those chips alone don’t measure greatness.

In an Iman Amongst Men interview, Horry said, “I’m not a big social media guy, but if you do look at me on Instagram, it’s @roberthorry7x. You know, everybody always wonder, ‘Why didn’t you ‘Big Shot?’ I’m like, ‘I want my name. My name is Robert Horry and I’m a seven-time champion. So I want you to know who I really am […] Big Shot is what gets me in front of the corporate America, if you know what I mean?

Everybody gets mad at me because it’s like I’ve had so many people say, ‘Man, you need to do the Bill Russell’, ‘You need to do the ‘Michael Jordan photo’ where you hold your rings and do that. I’m like, ‘I wanna do it, but that’s just not me’.

“That’s what they did. I had to come up with something different, but I haven’t thought of it yet,” said the 7x champion. Horry has not taken an iconic image like Jordan’s to show off all the rings that he has, although it has already been 15 years since Horry retired from the NBA.

During his tenure, he won 7 championships, 2 with the Houston Rockets, 3 with the Los Angeles Lakers, and then 2 with the San Antonio Spurs. While it is one thing that he might not be willing to flaunt because as many as 7 of those makes them lose their charm. But, in a conference call, Horry once blurted that he might have even lost his rings, to begin with!

Apparently, last year, the 7x champion was moving and might have misplaced his rings during the process. He then said, “I never wear them and the thing is, I don’t know where they are. I just moved and they are in a box somewhere. The movers weren’t supposed to touch it, but they touched it, but I am hoping they are in the house somewhere. I usually keep them in the bathroom in a drawer.”

Robert Horry is an anomaly

When looking at the players with the most championships in NBA history, the list is filled with Boston Celtics players who dominated the league in the 1950s and 1960s. Players during this era go from having 7 to all the way up to Bill Russell’s 11 championship rings. Later, it was Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen who made a meaningful chase at the record. They both joined Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and won 6 championships in their careers.

While most of them won all their championships on a single team, Robert Horry did not do the same. He won multiple championships with three different teams and eventually found himself in the history books. Being at the right place at the right time helped Horry in this process. However, he was also a dependable player who was known for making big shots in the clutch. This earned him his nickname Big Shot Rob.

While Horry is yet to come up with a way to flaunt his six rings, his first memory of Michael Jordan is before Jordan went for a mid-career retirement. It was during his second calendar year (1992-93) when after Michael got called out by traveling, but Horry still followed suit. MJ reached out, and said to him, “Young fella, if they call traveling on me, they definitely going to call traveling on you.” Jordan’s presence was impossible to not notice, and Horry’s impression of him has always been, after all these years, “really nice guy though. really nice guy.
