Gymnastics Legend Nadia Comaneci Calls For Action Amid Sabrina Voinea-Jordan Chiles Drama

Olympic icon Nadia Comaneci has put the Olympics on blast after watching fellow Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu denied a bronze medal in the floor final on Monday.

According to Comaneci, she has been left in disbelief by how “we play with athletes mental health and emotions like this,” in reference to Barbosu losing her place on the podium after the judges changed American gymnast Jordan Chiles’ final score to give the latter the bronze medal.

The 18-year-old Barbosu and the 17-year-old Sabrina Maneca-Voinea finished with a score of 13.700, which was tied for third before Chiles’ score was changed to 13.766 after a successful inquiry with the judges. Barbosu held the tiebreaker advantage over Maneca-Voinea — a higher execution score — which would have put her in bronze medal position.

Maneca-Voinea was assessed a 0.1 deduction after supposedly stepping out of bounds during her routine — a notion Comaneci clearly disagrees with.

“I don’t see the heel touching down.. do you? #sabrinavoinea” Comaneci wrote in the caption of her tweet showing a video of Voeinea’s controversial moment.

One of the comments on Comaneci’s post read, “@olympicromania you should formally appeal the decision!” The retired Olympian reposted the comment, indicating her agreement with this call to action.

The Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee has reportedly filed a formal appeal to the International Gymnastics Federation asking it to review Maneca-Voinea’s deduction, which means Comaneci’s outcry has been heard.

Whether or not the Olympics’ governing body acts on this issue, however, is an altogether different matter.
