Vince Gill believes it would be in poor taste to pitch his songs to his kids to record—but that doesn’t stop him from hoping.
Gill and wife Amy Grant’s daughter, Corrina, joined them on stage at Ryman Auditorium in December during their Christmas residency to sing a jaw-dropping version of Gill’s Grammy-winning hit “When My Amy Prays.” Corrina changed the words to “When My Mama Prays” – at Gill’s suggestion.
“It’s so much more interesting as ‘When My Mama Prays” because then it’s inclusive of everybody sitting in there,” Gill said. “I told her, ‘Man, if you’ll change that one word, I think you’ll shine.’”
Corrina remembers the first time she heard “When My Amy Prays.” She was standing side stage at Ryman Auditorium, and her dad played it, accompanying himself on guitar.
“I wept through every word,” Corrina said. “That song changed my life.”
Corrina: “That Song Changed My Life”
Corrina took a creative writing class in her junior year at Belmont University. She wrote her final paper about the impact “When My Amy Prays” had on her. In 2022, Grant sustained a brain injury in a bicycle accident that still impacts her memory two years later. Corrina was on tour with her dad, singing background vocals for him at the time, and they canceled a leg of the tour and came home to stay with Grant while she recovered.
“As she was still healing, there was a run of shows at the Ryman,” Corrina said, remembering that’s when Gill suggested she make the lyric change in the song. “Tears welled in my eyes, and we both cried at just the thought. I sang it every night for the rest of the tour. It was and always will be an honor to sing that song.”
Without knowing Gill’s desire that she would one day record her version of his song, Corinna confirmed she was already thinking about it.
“I hope to record it one day,” she said.
However, “When My Mama Prays” isn’t on Corrina’s debut album House On Another Street. Available on February 7, the 10-song project is a glimpse of where she’s been over the last three years and who she has become.
Vince Gill says Daughter Corrina is “Just Interesting”
“There are moments of heaviness, joy, introspection, questioning, a little grunge here and there, and a whole lot of vulnerability,” Corrina said. “All I know how to be is myself, and that is what this album is–an extension of who I am–right now–at 23 years old.”
Corrina, who professionally uses one name, wants her songs to be a safe place to land for listeners. She’s proud of herself for making the album – but not as proud as her dad is.
“She’s just interesting,” Gill said. “She opens her mouth, and you lean in. It’s a beautiful thing. She is doing it all on her own, which is healthy.
“I don’t care if your kid is a ball player, actress, singer, potter, or whatever,” he continued. “But when your kid does something special, it’s the best feeling in the whole wide world.”
