Dwayne Johnson’s Worst Financial Decision Was To Buy A Rolex Watch

In an interview with Oprah, Johnson shared a regrettable financial decision he made in his younger years, involving the purchase of a Rolex watch. As a teenager, Dwayne Johnson had envisioned certain things as symbols of success, including owning a Rolex watch. In 1999, when he started earning a decent income, the Central Intelligence star decided to fulfill this childhood dream.
“The first thing I splurged on, when I was a kid, 14 years old, 13, 14 years old. In my mind, what it meant to be successful was a Rolex watch. So there was such a valuable lesson out of this. I thought for years, Oh wait. Every successful man has a Rolex watch that has diamonds in it.”
However, the superstar admits that buying the luxury watch while still living in a rented apartment was a financially imprudent choice.
“So when I finally was making a little bit of money, and this was in 1999. I thought, ‘Okay.’ And this, by the way, I was still living in an apartment, paying monthly rent. But again… I was just renting. Horrible financial decision. This is what not to do. So I thought, ‘This is it. I’m gonna splurge.’ And I went and got myself a Rolex.”

Dwayne Johnson On The Saddening Loss His Rolex Watch In WWE

Adding to the saga of his ill-fated Rolex, the Red Notice star revealed an unfortunate incident that occurred during a WWE live show. While wearing the prized watch, a chaotic brawl broke out in the ring, causing the watch to slip off his hand. In a tense moment, Johnson searched for his fallen Rolex on live television, only to discover later that it had been accidentally damaged when a fellow wrestler fell on it. This unexpected turn of events further reinforced Johnson’s realization that the Rolex purchase had been an unnecessary expense.
“So I finally get my Rolex back, I go backstage and I look at it. I’m heartbroken now, this is my thing! And I go home that night, and I remember immediately thinking, ‘This is a sign, and I don’t need it,’ and it wasn’t right for me at that time. And I never got anything like that again.”
