The Paris Olympics are only the second time the sport is being held on the grandest international stage. The USA women’s 3×3 basketball team is the inaugural gold medalist in the sport.
The United States women’s 3×3 basketball team has not performed well in Paris at the ongoing Olympics. They now have a 0-3 record in Paris and are at the bottom of the 12-team standings.
They played nine games at the Tokyo Olympics and recorded eight wins and one loss. They faced Russia in the finals of the competition and defeated them 18-15 to win the gold medal. The roster for the USA Women’s 3×3 basketball team featured some of the biggest names from the WNBA.
Stefanie Dolson, Kelsey Plum, Allisha Gray and Jackie Young were part of the gold medal-winning team in Tokyo. This year at the Paris Olympics, the 3×3 basketball women’s roster has seen a complete overhaul.
Dearica Hamby, Cierra Burdick, Rhyne Howard and Hailey Van Lith are the new players representing the USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics. LA Sparks rookie Cameron Brink was also named to the squad; however, a mid-season torn ACL injury sidelined her from any action on the hard court.
USA Women’s 3×3 Basketball Team needs to find chemistry
Compared to a standard 5×5 basketball game, a 3×3 basketball game is much faster, with plays unfolding quicker than the standard format. With the USA Women’s 3×3 basketball team having just two weeks to practice, their lack of cohesiveness as a team was quite evident.
After their 17-13 defeat against Germany, Hailey Van Lith shared her views with the reporters.
“At the end of the game, honestly, we were winded. We started playing soft. And they played much harder than us,” Van Lith said. (via USA Today)
The USA 3×3 women’s basketball team needs to find chemistry between them if they want to repeat their gold medal feat. They will face Spain next in the fourth match of the tournament on Friday.
