ESPN’s Mike Greenberg is earning major points with Swifties: Sportscaster Leaves Fans ‘Surprised’ With Lesser-Known Taylor Swift Reference While Reporting on Travis Kelce

Who knew that ESPN’s Mike Greenberg was such a Swiftie.

The sportscaster and host of ESPN’s Get Up was reporting on Travis Kelce on Thursday when he impressed fans with his knowledge of the tight end’s superstar girlfriend, Taylor Swift.

The situation went down during the sports program’s Madden Rating Reveal, which discusses player ratings for the highly-anticipated video game Madden NFL 25.

Greenberg shared that Kelce, 34, received a 99 rating, the highest rating among all tight ends in the league. While announcing the big accomplishment, the media personality made a point to slip in a not-so-subtle reference to Swift’s discography.

“It is the first day of August, so it’s a big day for Taylor Swift and it’s a big day for Travis Kelce,” Greenberg said in the clip.

Swifties know that Greenberg was referring to Swift’s song, “August,” which fans have already been celebrating as the new month was officially ushered in on Thursday.

“I’m surprised that they know about august,” one person wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

“That’s a pretty good one,” another user admitted, adding, “August isn’t necessarily something the non Swifties know.”

“You HAVE to love when the [ESPN] team can use that reference so seamlessly!!” someone else agreed.

Swift’s fans have been having a ball online while welcoming the start of August, and there’s certainly been no shortage of memes going around on social media.

“happy salt air and the rust on your door month to all who celebrate,” one fan wrote on X, referencing the opening lyrics from the song.

Swift spent the first day of August performing in Warsaw, Poland as part of the ongoing European leg of the Eras Tour. She will play two more shows in Warsaw over the weekend, before heading to Vienna next week.
