For years, S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury has easily been the coolest personality in the Marvel movies, but he no longer holds the top position. Ever since fans were introduced to the furry feline named Goose in Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, Samuel L. Jackson went down to second position.

Marvel Created a CGI Cat For Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel
Disney and Marvel’s 2019 superhero flick Captain Marvel, featuring Brie Larson is the first female-fronted stand-alone movie in the MCU. Taking place in the 1990s the movie explores the origin story of the photon-blasting space warrior Carol Danvers. But the one character that not only stole the show but also befriended both Carol and Nick Fury, was the orange tabby Goose.
Captain Marvel had a feisty feline companion, Goose
The feisty feline companion, Goose, was literally the showstopper in Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel. In the movie, the cat goes to space with his new friends with some surprises in store for everyone. But while being the coolest and weirdest supporting character in MCU, since Rocket Racoon and Groot in the Guardians of the Galaxy, Goose wasn’t an actual cat.
Goose was a computer-generated cat
According to reports shared by The Hollywood Reporter, Goose is actually computer-generated. Marvel had to employ a VFX team to create a fully CG feline. Initially, the cat was modeled on a real feline named Reggie who had to be lidar scanned to be cloned in CG by the VFX team. The whole process took days to complete and has a whopping 2,400 visual effects shots.
Reasons Why MCU Was Forced to Use VFX For Goose
But why exactly, did Marvel decide to use a CG cat instead of a real fur ball? According to The Hollywood Reporter, it was discussed that Goose was created with the help of CGI because of two reasons. The obvious reason is that real animals are often difficult to work with. It takes a lot of training, and several shots and time gets wasted through the process.

Nonetheless, another reason, which is certainly the most important one is Brie Larson. Apparently, the actress has an allergy to cats. Having a serious medical condition, Larson was the main reason why Marvel decided to use a CGI cat over a real one. Unwilling to put the actress’ health in danger, MCU hired a VFX team.

Finally, the results were flawless and people never guessed that Goose was actually computer-generated. Fans and audiences appreciated the movie and turned Goose into a viral superstar. Internet got flooded with the #GoosetheCat emoji hashtag, and the character became a super popular icon.
