Scarlett Johansson has had her fair share of movies and controversies. Before she found the MCU fame, the actress starred in a 2003 movie titled Lost in Translation. With Bill Murray and Giovani Ribisi in the mix, the film was helmed by Sophia Coppola as the director.
Based loosely on her falling-apart marriage with Spike Jonze, Coppola based a character inspired by her former husband. During the premiere of Lost in Translation, the director revealed that Spike Jonze’s friend scolded her at her own premiere for the portrayal!

Scarlett Johansson’s Indie Film Caused Controversies
With Scarlett Johansson in the lead role alongside Bill Murray, the story shifts its narrative towards Johansson taking care of Bill Murray as he goes through a midlife crisis. But before the shift in the narrative, two characters join the lead stars which are inspired by real-life incidents of Sofia Coppola.

In an interview with Variety, the director talked about her Scarlett Johansson-led movie and how the character of John (portrayed by Giovani Ribsi) was loosely based on her former husband. During their chat, Sofia Coppola revealed that Spike Jonze’s friend scolded her at her own premiere and defended his friend.
“He apologized to me about that. He scolded me at my premiere, but he apologized. I think he was being a good friend. He thought he was defending Spike, but he was putting me down at my premiere. It came out of him trying to be a good friend to Spike.”
In turn, Spike Jonze made the 2013 movie titled Her which also featured Scarlett Johansson. In the movie, the character of Rooney Mara is thought to have been inspired by Sofia Coppola.

Spike Jonze’s Her
10 years after Lost in Translation, Spike Jonze directed the 2013 movie titled Her. In that movie, Joaquin Phoenix plays a depressed man who falls in love with an AI. In the movie, Rooney Mara portrays the character of Catherine who becomes the ex-lover of Joaquin Phoenix. As per Sofia Coppola’s chat with Variety, she felt that the character was meant for her.
“I never saw it! From the trailer, it looks the same too. We have the same production designer. But I haven’t seen it. I know people really like that movie, but I haven’t seen it. I don’t know if I want to see Rooney Mara as me [laughs].”
Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation received a rating of 7.7/10 on IMDB and a whopping 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Scarlett Johansson-starrer is available to stream on Netflix in the U.S.
