Patrick Mahomes in Coors Light commercial (Via Coors Light YouTube)
Patrick Mahomes appeared in a commercial for the mega beer brand Coor Light. However, as per the rules stipulated by the NFL, he is not allowed to appear in advertisements for a beer company. Yet, the quarterback will not be fined for his appearances in the commercial, here’s why.
As per the NFL rules, active players are prohibited from promoting alcohol. This includes the brands that are advertising with the NFL. This rule has been in place since the AFL and NFL merged in 1970. However, there has been some relaxation allowed within the rules.
Active players such as Patrick Mahomes can appear in a commercial by a beer company but cannot drink or endorse the beverage. And the viral ad from the Kansas City Chiefs shot caller is not for Coors Light beer but a Coors Light time capsule. So, no fine will be incurred by him.
In the advertisement, Mahomes mocks the rules in place by the NFL but doesn’t break any of them. Apart from the viral time capsule ad, Coors Light has also released a figurine called ‘Redactrick’. The brand posted on Instagram:
“Meet Redactrick, the new limited-edition figurine commemorating our Time Capsule Commercial with Patrick Mahomes, benefiting the 15 and Mahomies Foundation. Actually redacted to obscure his identity (since Patrick can’t technically promote Coors Light).”
So, Mahomes isn’t technically endorsing a beer in this ad or through the figurine released by Coors Light. Hence, the three-time Super Bowl winner will not be fined for either his participation in the advertising campaign or for the figurines.
Patrick Mahomes has a partnership with Coors Light
Over the last couple of years, Patrick Mahomes has partnered with Coors Light to promote the brand without promoting the beer. In 2022, Mahomes was in a Coors ‘Light’ commercial for flashlights. And in 2023, it was Coors’ ‘Bear’ commercial.
For this year, Mahomes and Coors Light aren’t done yet. On June 29, Coors Light will host an event on their YouTube channel at 11:00 AM EST.
They will be burying the time capsule brewery in Colorado containing this ad by Mahomes, which will be opened up after the Chiefs QB retires. Though Mahomes will not be present at the venue.
