“I don’t think I’m going to survive this”: Scarlett Johansson Feared She Would Die Halfway Through ‘The Avengers’, Admitted Superhero Lifestyle is Not That Fun

Scarlett Johansson, celebrated for her diverse acting roles, left an enduring impact on the superhero realm.

She became an international sensation through her compelling depiction of Natasha Romanoff, also known as Black Widow, within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Her journey as Black Widow unfolded across multiple MCU films, showcasing her as a proficient spy, a multifaceted character with a troubled past, and an indispensable member of the Avengers. Johansson’s magnetic presence and adrenaline-pumping action sequences cemented her status as a formidable superheroine, offering inspiration to women and fans of all generations. However, she once admitted that playing a superhero isn’t easy.

Scarlett Johansson Had A Tough Time During Avengers Filming

During an interview with Success, Scarlett Johansson was inquired about what sets her apart from those who intentionally complicate their already challenging lives. “Self-reflection,” she replied. Johansson said she welcomes adversity, but she does so only after careful contemplation of the rewards it might offer. She expressed that every project she has undertaken was chosen with the assurance that it would bring her a private sense of happiness.

Johansson asserted that she has come to the realization that, despite the inherent hardship, it’s the process itself that fills her with delight. She explained that there is an element of discomfort when striving for greatness, whether it be emotional or physical. In the context of superhero films, there is undoubtedly some pain involved. It’s a lifestyle that isn’t particularly enjoyable. However, it’s the challenge itself that brings her happiness, rather than the final outcome.

Johansson told Success:
“The challenge of, ‘How far can I push myself?’ Like doing the play—‘I don’t think I’m going to survive this.’ Or doing The Avengers—‘I’m gonna die halfway through this job.’ Being able to do something that feels impossible makes me feel incredibly happy.”
She understands the immense risks involved: the potential for career setbacks and public embarrassment on a global scale. Thus far, numerous of her endeavors have yielded impressive outcomes, reaping valuable rewards in return.

Johansson told AP:
“I think it’s important in general to know your own worth and stand up for yourself. And I think in this industry … I’ve been working for such a long time, it’s been almost thirty years, and so I’ve seen that … you know, I think there’s so much that has shifted over those thirty years. In some time before, maybe you would feel, oh, gosh, if I stand up for myself, I might never work again, or I might be, like, blacklisted in some way.”
Johansson marked her first appearance in the Marvel universe in the 2010 film Iron Man 2, embarking on a journey with the franchise that spanned over a decade. Her tenure within the MCU reached its conclusion in 2019 with her final portrayal in the film Avengers: Endgame.
