Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL since he entered the league in 2017. He took over as the Chiefs’ starting quarterback in his second season after he sat behind Alex Smith his rookie year.
Mahomes has since gone on to win three Super Bowls, has been named Super Bowl MVP three times, selected to six Pro Bowls and three All-Pro selections and has a 103.5 passer rating.
Sports analyst and radio host Colin Cowherd, host of “The Herd with Colin Cowherd”, recently raved about Mahomes’ ability to produce at a high level with little talent at the wide receiver position.
Cowherd said:

“Kansas City, their wide receiver position is a hazmat spill. It’s incredible. …Thank God Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes are resourceful. They are well-run. They have struggled at wide receivers— This is how great Mahomes is. Matt Stafford won a Super Bowl, but Cooper Kupp for that year was recoverable.
“Brady, great, went to Tampa. AB, Gronk, Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, the receiving corps. There’s nothing here [Kansas City]. They don’t have a one. I’m not sure they have a two. It’s like Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible. Doesn’t really matter about the plot. The supporting cast, he’ll take a motorcycle off a cliff, parachute save the day. You’ll watch. It’ll be great,” he added.
Patrick Mahomes has only had one wide receiver in his career record 1,000 or more receiving yards in a single season
In his seven-year career in the NFL so far, Patrick Mahomes has only had one wide receiver in his career that he’s thrown to who has recorded over 1,000 yards in a single season. That one wide receiver happens to be Tyreek Hill.
According to Statmuse, Hill was the last WR in Chiefs franchise history to have a season where a wide receiver had over 1,000 yards. He did it four times in his tenure with the Chiefs, most recently in 2021.
Outside of Hill, Mahomes hasn’t played with many playmakers at the wide receiver position.
The Kansas City Chiefs acquired Marquise Brown this off-season but he could be out for the first few weeks of the season as he’s dealing with a shoulder injury. Furthermore, second-year wide receiver Rashee Rice could have a potential suspension to start the season.
It could be yet another year that Mahomes doesn’t have a 1,000-yard wide receiver as the franchise looks to create history by winning the Super Bowl for a third consecutive year.
