Angel Reese to join new women’s basketball league
Angel Reese announced she will join the Unrivaled Basketball League, a 3-on-3 women’s league co-founded by WNBA stars Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier. Reese is the first WNBA rookie to sign with the league, which is set to kick off in January 2025 in Miami, Florida.
Unrivaled aims to provide a lucrative alternative for WNBA players during the offseason, offering the highest average salaries in women’s professional sports history.
Reese expressed her enthusiasm on social media, stating, “305 BARBIEEEEE,” referencing Miami’s area code.
In addition to Reese, WNBA players Kelsey Plum, Rhyne Howard, Chelsea Gray, Arike Ogunbowale, Jewell Loyd, Jackie Young and Kahleah Copper have confirmed their participation in the league, with 20 spots remaining.
The league aims to give women’s basketball players the opportunity to earn money while playing in the US, eliminating the need to rely on overseas contracts for supplemental income in the offseason.
The league’s founding partners include notable figures from various sports and industries, such as US women’s soccer icons Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe, and former NBA stars Carmelo Anthony and Steve Nash.
This season, Angel Reese is averaging 13.5 points, 12.0 rebounds, and 1.8 assists, and was named an All-Star alongside Caitlin Clark.
