Industry Expert Reveals Why Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible 7 Was a Success Despite Earning Over $211M Less Than ‘Fallout’

This year has witnessed some incredible releases, with the release of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One on 12 July 2023. Mission: Impossible fans again got to see their favorite star, Tom Cruise, aka Etha Hunt, and his IMF team face off against “the Entity” and fight to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands.

It is said that Mission: Impossible 7‘s box office fell short of expectations due to tough competition (especially from Barbenheimer) and high production costs. But according to the industry expert, it is still a success. How? Let’s find out.

Mission Impossible 7 is Still a Success

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One made $235 million at the box office — a number which is both successful and disappointing for the franchise. If compared with Tom Cruise‘s other movies like Top Gun: Maverick, Mission: Impossible 7 earned less than half its box office.

But so what? The industry expert Brandon Davis thinks that the movie is a success even after earning less than what was expected. He believes that the movie could have definitely crossed the bar, but some factors have hindered its potential success.

On September 9, the expert took to X (formerly Twitter) and reposted the post by The Hollywood Handle and wrote:
“This movie got set back by expensive COVID shutdowns, a release date which limited IMAX tickets, Barbenheimer hype in general, and the strike not allowing additional promo from its movie star – and still made money.”

No doubt, the film had some stiff competition, going up against movies like Indy 5, and of course Barbie and Oppenheimer. But luckily, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One has found a fairly decent success.

Mission Impossible 7 Contributed to Franchise Reach $4 Billion Mark

Mission: Impossible 7 had a strong start, but it faced a tough road. Big blockbusters like Barbie, Oppenheimer, and Blue Beetle were already on the horizon and chipped away at the film’s box office legs. But the seventh installment did contribute to the Mission: Impossible franchise as it has achieved an astounding milestone, surpassing the $4 billion mark in worldwide box office earnings.

With seven movies in the series, the total gross now stands at an impressive $4.11 billion, including the recent addition of Dead Reckoning Part One, which contributed $541.8 million in total. Currently, the probability for the seventh movie looks uncertain as the break-even point is estimated at around $600 million worldwide.

But many feel it’s a success because when it first premiered, the film received fantastic reviews and was hailed as one of the best in the series.

It’s undoubtedly a true summer blockbuster and a breath of fresh air after lots of false promised movies like The Flash and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (which had big marketing and budgets but fell short). Though the film couldn’t do well at the box office, it won the hearts of many.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One will be made available for streaming on Paramount+ after its theatrical run comes to a close.
