Euphoria is a pretty well-written show as creator Sam Levinson sheds light on a group of high school students who try to steer their ship through issues of drugs, s*x, and violence.

The drama series starring the likes of Zendaya and Sydney Sweeney only began in 2019 and has already amassed 42 Emmy Awards, further highlighting just how highly the show is rated.

As much as Euphoria is popular for its intriguing sub-plots and much-loved cast, it also attracts millions of eyeballs for the sheer amount of explicit scenes, which also unintendedly set the tone for how the actors involved in the scenes are perceived off the camera.

Why Sydney Sweeney Feels She Has Lost Her Voice

Zendaya is perhaps the most popular face from Euphoria, wherein she plays the role of Rue Bennett, a recovering drug addict. However, the Dune star hasn’t been involved in any n*de scenes in the show, which has a reputation for its full-frontal n*dity moments.

Rather, it’s Sydney Sweeney – who plays Cassie Howard – who has plenty of raw scenes in the show.

There’s always worry among actors concerning their image being influenced or overshadowed by certain roles, which for some reason happens frequently with roles that include explicit content. Sharon Stone is an accomplished actress, having played different types of characters. Yet, she is most famous for her 1992 movie, Basic Instinct, which features the infamous interrogation scene.

However, getting exaggeratedly attached to certain roles isn’t Sweeney’s biggest concern at the moment. Instead, it’s failing to reach her fans through her authentic voice.

In an interview with Spanish newspaper El País, she said:

“The most difficult thing for me is that I never speak with my authentic voice because you are the journalists who write my voice. I can have the most authentic conversation with you, but what we say or the context behind it ends up being changed, and readers see it differently. It’s the hardest for me.”

To be fair, it’s hard to disagree with the 25-year-old. In times where there are thousands of outlets and millions of strong voices on social media, the real voices of our favorite stars do get changed and often lost.

This Euphoria Scene Allowed Sydney Sweeney to Truly Understand Her Character

Sweeney’s Cassie might get the most limelight for her explicit encounters, but she’s a character with a lot of depth and complexities. She grew up with an alcoholic mother and an absent dad and has been se*ualized from an early age, and her troubled childhood has heightened her insecurities.

Akin to how fans struggle to hear the actress’s authentic voice, even Sweeney struggled to grasp what her character was all about. She needed time to fully understand her character, and that moment came in Season 2. In an interview with Deadline, she revealed:

“It was a scene where she’s sitting in her bathroom and she’s surrounded by all the flowers. I don’t know what it was about it, but that scene just completely broke me — or Cassie. After that moment, I knew that I had so much sympathy for her and empathy for her, even though she was making so many terrible decisions. I hoped that maybe there was an ounce of the audience that would be able to feel empathy for her as well.”

Now that Sweeney has truly uncovered the baggage that her character carries, it’ll be interesting to see how things further develop in Season 3 of Euphoria. For that though, we’ll have to wait until at least 2025.
