Maren Morris Praises Beyoncé for ‘Reclaiming Country Music for Black People’-nhung

Maren Morris is voicing her support for Beyoncé as the pop icon gears up to release her highly anticipated country album, *Cowboy Carter.*

“It was born out of an experience I had years ago where I didn’t feel welcomed… and it was very clear that I wasn’t,” Morris shared in a social media post.

Morris joined many others in praising Beyoncé for highlighting the incident.

“Drag them, Queen,” she approvingly commented, according to *People.*

Morris herself has been vocal about critiquing the culture of country music, consistently calling out instances of racism, sexism, and homophobia within the genre. Notably, she engaged in a public feud with Jason Aldean’s wife, Brittany, after Brittany made transphobic comments in an Instagram reel in 2022.

In late 2023, Morris released two songs, “The Tree” and “Get the Hell Out of Here,” which many interpreted as her official departure from country music. In a sweeping *Los Angeles Times* interview, she announced her intention to step away from the genre, though she later clarified that while she’ll always feel connected to country music, she hopes to distance herself from some of its more harmful elements.

The singer didn’t provide details, but it’s likely she was referencing the 2016 CMA Awards, where she performed “Daddy Lessons” from her *Lemonade* album alongside The Chicks.

The performance received mixed reactions. While many praised it as a highlight of the show, The Chicks’ frontwoman Natalie Maines later shared that she received hostile comments from “racist a–holes.”

Artist manager and Black Opry co-director Tanner Davenport also recalled the event on Twitter, remembering a woman in the crowd shouting, “Get that Black b—h off the stage!”

“I was at the CMAs the night this happened. I’ll never forget when a woman in front of me yelled ‘Get that Black bi**h off the stage!’ These experiences have happened countless times to numerous Black folks in country music spaces. We’re trying to change that at @BlackOpry,” he tweeted.

Shortly after the awards, an unnamed artist manager alleged to *Billboard* that he witnessed Alan Jackson walk out of his front-row seat in protest of Beyoncé’s performance, though evidence of this incident remains scarce.

Beyoncé has already released two tracks from *Cowboy Carter,* including the country radio hit “Texas Hold ‘Em.” She’s also been teasing exciting collaborations and surprises on the album’s tracklist.
