Artist Alexandra Grant has a lot of expectations on her shoulders. She is, after all, dating Keanu Reeves, an actor so beloved he’s been dubbed the ‘Internet’s boyfriend.’
The adorable couple keep their relationship largely out of the public eye, with the exception of occasional red carpet appearances.
The accomplished career woman, 50, attended the Los Angeles Beverly Arts Icon Awards on Friday, where she was being honored, and walked the red carpet without her actor boyfriend, 59 – who recently played a live gig with his band Dogstar.
In response to being asked what is is like dating someone so famous, and whether it is harder to walk red carpet with or without the John Wick star, she made a rare comment about their relationship.
‘The good news about falling in love as an adult is that I had built my own career by the time that my relationship had begun,’ she told People. ‘I feel very confident in the relationship on the red carpet. I feel confident on it alone.’
Grant and Reeves go back to at least 2011 when they started out as friends working on the book Ode to Happiness, which is a grown-up picture book with illustrations by Grant and text from Reeves.
Over the years, their friendship turned into romance and one of our favorite celebrity couples was born.
Alexandra talked about a moment when she felt stuck creatively and how Reeves helped her through it.
‘In a moment of frustration in my life, I once said, ‘Sometimes I feel like a Maserati stuck in traffic,’ that I have this big engine, but, for a variety of reasons, that I couldn’t ever go,’ she told the outlet.
‘And I know a lot of people feel frustrated in their lives, that they’re not able to run their engine.’
She added: ‘I think every creative person feels that way.’
‘What I love about Keanu and our exchange is that we’re pushing each other to build new roads,’ she gushed. ‘Seeing the other person’s problem-solving is inspiring, like, ‘Oh, well, okay, this one, that’s a cul-de-sac. How do I try this other thing?’ ‘
‘He’s such an inspiration to me,’ she continued. ‘He’s so creative, he’s so kind. He works so hard.’
And she explained that though they work in different mediums, at heart they are both storytellers.
‘To make a film, you require hundreds of people. To be an artist, you don’t. You require one. You require a community to get the work into the world, but not to actually make it. I think part of the inspiration is the differences of scale,’ she explained.
And she is also a fan of her boyfriend’s side project, his band Dogstar and didn’t mind that he recently had to skip their standing Friday night ‘art date’ to play a live gig.
‘I’m really proud,’ she said, adding: ‘I am a huge Dogstar fan.
‘I had the great pleasure of going to their first public show and because I’ve been listening to the latest album for quite some time, I was one of the only people in the audience who knew all the lyrics.
‘That was really cool. It’s fun. It’s beyond fun,’ she said.
And the Speed star is just as smitten with his girlfriend as she is with him. In March 2023, he was asked what his last moment of bliss was.
‘A couple of days ago with my honey. We were smiling and laughing and giggling. Feeling great. It was just really nice to be together,’ he told People.
