Will Smith is celebrating his daughter Willow Smith after she became the first in their musical family to hit one billion streams.
Taking to Instagram with a screenshot of the numbers for Willow’s song “…Wait a Minute!” on Wednesday (February 7), Will wrote, “@willowsmith is the first person in the family to have a song with a BILLION streams!!”
The track was released in 2015 as the second single off her debut album, Ardipithecus.
When a fan in Will’s comments questioned whether his smash “Summertime” had hit one billion streams, the superstar responded, “not even close.” [Currently, “Summertime” and its remixes have around 137 million streams on Spotify, spread across the song’s appearances on studio albums and compilations.]
However, his son Jaden Smith‘s song “RITMO (Bad Boys For Life) (Remix)” with Black Eyed Peas and J Balvin is very close to the billion stream mark at over 939 million streams on Spotify as this writing.
Willow Smith made history in 2023 as well, becoming the first artist ever to receive an NFT plaque from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
The plaque is in recognition of Willow’s 2010 breakout single “Whip My Hair” going triple platinum, as well as her songs “Wait A Minute!” and “Meet Me At Our Spot” going double platinum and her Travis Barker-assisted “Transparent Soul” going platinum. The plaque’s artwork was commissioned by Willow herself alongside her label, Roc Nation, and Infinite Objects.
“I am beyond grateful to have the opportunity to engage in the sacred process that is music,” Willow Smith said in a press release on Thursday (May 25) of last year. “BIG LOVE to RIAA and Infinite Objects! I am so honored to be able to celebrate these milestones in such an innovative way.”
The authenticated Infinite Objects Video Print display will automatically change the song’s artwork when the RIAA updates Willow’s certifications.
Will Smith has been a proud papa throughout the journey. Just one month prior to the NFT plaque, the Bad Boys actor took to Instagram to share footage of Willow’s Coachella set. “WILLOWCHELLA!!” he captioned the post, which sees Will grinning from ear to ear as he watches his daughter perform.
Later on in the show, Willow and her brother Jaden performed their “Summertime in Paris” collaboration.
In a separate post he made the following day, the Academy Award-winning actor highlighted another segment from Willow’s performance, writing in the caption: ” I can’t stop crying.”
