Margot Robbie’s Life Became Living Nightmare Due to Her Battle With Major Imposter Syndrome

Whether she is the iconic doll in Barbie or the future superstar in Babylon, Margot Robbie has become well-known for portraying outrageous roles in recent years. Despite having played a variety of characters on screen, the 32-year-old admits that she struggled with self-confidence early in her career.

The talented actress, and producer, discussed her own experiences with ‘imposter syndrome’. In an interview with Vogue, she spoke candidly about the need to appear flawless and the frequent feelings of non-acceptance.

Robbie talked about how women may find it particularly difficult to overcome ‘imposter syndrome’ because they often feel they don’t belong in particular places or situations. Similarly, she also felt this feeling early during her career, especially when she worked with renowned directors and actors.

She has, nonetheless, mastered the art of channeling these emotions into a source of inspiration and drive rather than worry and self-doubt.

Margot Robbie Discusses Having Imposter Syndrome

Even celebrities can suffer from imposter syndrome, which is the feeling of inadequacy or doubt in one’s own abilities.

During an interview with Vogue, Margot Robbie was transparent about her struggle and described the severity of her imposter syndrome in the early years of her career. “For the first couple of years, I had major imposter syndrome,” she said.
“Every time I’d go (to a red carpet event), I was like, ‘I can’t believe they let me in. Someone’s going to notice that I don’t belong here, they’re going to kick me out of Hollywood.’”

The Suicide Squad actress had previously appeared in supporting roles in films like About Time. But her portrayal of Naomi Lapaglia in The Wolf of Wall Street, also starring Leonardo DiCaprio, pushed her into the limelight. From there, she started landing parts in high-profile movies, including a cameo in The Big Short and the portrayal of Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad.

In addition to her on-screen work, Robbie also played a number of roles behind the camera, lending her voice to movies like Peter Rabbit and managing the production of Promising Young Woman.

Thus, as she admitted, her ‌imposter syndrome seems to have become more relaxed as the years went by.

The Actress Gradually Felt More Confident in Herself

Margot Robbie has also been gravitating more recently toward dramatic roles, working on films like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Babylon with filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino and Damien Chezelle. She will be seen next in Wes Anderson’s movie, Asteroid City, which will be released on June 16th, 2023, in addition to her latest recent performance in and as Barbie.

As a result, the actress noticed a gradual decrease in her insecurities now that she is working with big names in the industry, recalling:
“(I thought), Oh wow, I don’t have that imposter syndrome anymore. I’m really in this industry, it’s not this wonderful dream that I’m going to wake up from, and it’s all going to disappear.’”
Additionally, Robbie gave some sound advice on overcoming imposter syndrome. She recommends stepping back and gaining perspective, as well as asking for help from friends, family, or a therapist.

Well, it’s encouraging to hear someone as talented as Margot Robbie talk openly about her own struggles with imposter syndrome in a culture where we’re constantly exposed to images of perfection.

Because of her transparency and vulnerability, she serves as a reminder that we are all just humans and that it’s okay to occasionally feel non-acceptable. In the end, it’s how we handle those emotions that define who we are. And thus, anything is possible with a little bit of perspective and self-compassion.

Also, it’s safe to say that with Barbie, the actress begins the next phase of her career.

Barbie is scheduled to premiere on July 21, 2023.
