Brie Larson, among the superheroes Marvel considered the most heartbreaking, did not make it to the list.

Marvel Chose Only the Superheroes Whose Deaths Were "Most Heartbreaking" for Fans: Brie Larson Didn't Make the Cut

Apart from being famous for rock-cutting storylines, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is also famous for killing off characters whose deaths could take a serious toll on fans. While it all mainly began in Avengers: Infinity War back in 2018 with Loki being the first one to get eliminated despite being a major fan-favorite (yes, a different variant of the antihero does exist, but that’s not the point here), the war is somewhat continuing as major superheroes keep on dying.

However, during this entire war, there is one character who is one of the biggest fan-favorites, but Marvel didn’t find her death to be ‘heartbreaking’ enough, as compared to the other superheroes. This character is none other than Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, who just couldn’t make the cut for the elimination round. (Perhaps, thankfully so?)

Brie Larson Wasn’t Fit For The ‘Most Heartbreaking Death’ As Per Marvel

All of these killings and elimination started when the part where Thanos wipes out half the population of the universe in a Malthusian coup in the comics finally appeared in front of the higher-ups at Marvel. In terms of the films, it started with Avengers: Infinity War (2018).

Thus, to figure out who gets to live and who dies in the 2018 tear-jerking blockbuster, Kevin Feige decided to eliminate those superheroes whose deaths ‘would be the most heartbreaking.’ As per MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios:

“Among those who would evaporate according to that logic: T’Challa, because he was the new audience favorite; Bucky Barnes because it would devastate Steve Rogers; and, likewise, Peter Parker because it would be a gut punch for Tony Stark.”
However, Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel wasn’t included in this list because, well, her story in the MCU started with a cameo in the post-credits scene of Avengers: Infinity War itself when Nick Fury sends a pager to her before evaporating, so the creators probably didn’t get a chance there.

Furthermore, she was also the one to save Robert Downey Jr.‘s Iron Man and Nebula when they were stranded in space and on the verge of death (the beginning of Avengers: Endgame) and also the one who played a major role in the last fight in Avengers: Endgame as well.

Thus, it might be concluded that since Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel played a very crucial part in saving the world (Tony Stark did too, but that’s a different story), the MCU couldn’t eliminate her character just like that.

The Reason Why Marvel Kept The Original Avengers Alive In Infinity War

The original Avengers

While still talking about Avengers: Infinity War, apart from Brie Larson‘s Captain Marvel, all six of the main Avengers didn’t evaporate either, and were among the few remaining superheroes at the beginning of Avengers: Endgame.

The masterminds behind these blockbusters had a well-plotted plan for keeping these characters alive as well. As per MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios:

“The filmmakers kept the six original Avengers alive so that Endgame could wrap up their stories, and made sure to retain non-Avengers characters with a range of personalities. As Markus said, ‘If people are joking, Nebula can come in and just kill the laughs, which is very fun to do. If people are very serious, Rocket can come in and make fun of them.’”
Although fans must have been happy to see the main Avengers still alive, little did they know that it wasn’t for long but only until Avengers: Endgame, where not just one but three of the main Avengers would leave, once and for all–two of whom gave their lives and one passed down his shield–to save the world.
