Martin McDonagh added the scene of Colm cutting off his finger because he thought it was funny and there was no subtext to it

Not only has she made a name for herself as one of the most widely adored artists of all time, having a huge fan base, but also making her way into other fields, including cinematography and directing, having directed music videos for songs like Anti-Hero, Bejeweled, Karma, and most famously, All Too Well: The Short Film, for which she has won a number of accolades.

The singer-songwriter has gained quite a lot of recognition for her directorial capabilities, so much so that she gave an interview with Variety on the subject, alongside the widely respected, Oscar winning-director, Martin McDonagh. Here, Swift spoke about his most famous work, The Banshees of Inisherin, trying to interpret the meaning of an aspect of this film, only to find out that it wasn’t as deep as she thought.
Taylor Swift’s Interpretation of The Banshees of Inisherin
Taylor Swift is truly a mastermind when it comes to all aspects of her professional life. Be it dropping hints about future projects here and there for her fans to solve, or honoring her past projects from things in the present, it would not be all too far-fetched to say that there are no coincidences when it comes to the singer-songwriter, as everything she does is thought out.

“I talked to a friend of mine, who’s a therapist, and she was saying, ‘If someone brought this dream, to me and said I had this dream,’ So I’m wanting to cut my finger off and it’s all about,’ she would say it’s because you feel like your aliveness is being cut off by a part of your life”
One would expect someone, who looks into to deeper meaning of this professionally, to be good at doing the same when watching films, this, however, wasn’t the case during her interview with Variety.
Swift told Martin McDonagh about how, one of her friends, who is a therapist, told her about a part of the film, that involved one of the characters, cutting off one of his fingers. She added that they interpreted this as their aliveness being cut off by something distressing in their life.
The Director Told Her That She Was Wrong
One would expect Taylor Swift to be right on point considering the fact that The Banshees of Inisherin is full of the intention of shots and parts of the story being hidden under layers of subtext. This, however, was not the case, as Martin McDonagh, went on to tell her during their interview with Variety.
“I just thought it was funny,”
The director told the singer-songwriter that that was not his intention at all. He confessed his reason for making the character want to cut his fingers off was nothing deep, but simply added because he thought this addition would be funny to the plot of the film.
