Clark’s 30-point performance in the national title loss drew significant criticism along the way.

Paige Spiranac, a prominent figure in the golf community, stepped up to defend Caitlin Clark on Sunday following Iowa’s defeat to South Carolina in the national championship game. Throughout her pursuit of the all-time scoring record and a shot at the national title, Clark faced criticism from several WNBA legends, including Diana Taurasi, Sheryl Swoopes, Breanna Stewart, and Lynette Woodard, over the span of a few months.

Spiranac, who herself has been a target of criticism on social media, expressed disappointment but not surprise at the “hate” directed towards Clark. In a post on X, she remarked, “The hate towards Caitlin Clark from current and former players is disappointing but not surprising. Women can be absolutely vicious to other women while also preaching empowering the next generation. I’ve seen it first hand but we must remember a rising tide lifts all boats.”

Despite the criticism, Clark remained unfazed and continued to deliver outstanding performances on the court. Her resilience was evident as she poured in 30 points in the loss against the Gamecocks.

Reflecting on her journey, Clark expressed gratitude for the special year she had experienced. She acknowledged the challenges of surpassing the achievements of the previous year but credited the unwavering belief of everyone in the team’s locker room for making this season even more memorable.

Looking ahead, Clark’s next challenge awaits in the WNBA. Widely anticipated to be the top pick in the upcoming April 15 draft, she is poised to join the ranks of professional basketball, likely joining the Indiana Fever, who hold the coveted No. 1 spot for the second consecutive year after selecting Aliyah Boston from South Carolina with the top pick last year.
