Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes has played a key role in the Kansas City Chiefs winning back-to-back Super Bowls. Now he is doing his offseason part to help them get positioned for a run at the NFL’s first ever three-peat.

According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Chiefs are restructuring Mahomes’ contract to create more than $21M in additional salary cap space this offseason.

That is huge news for a Chiefs team that still has some flaws to improve on its roster, even after winning its third Super Bowl in the past five years.

The Chiefs already re-signed superstar defensive tackle Chris Jones to a huge contract extension this week and still have to work out a deal with franchise cornerback L’Jarius Sneed. That will not be cheap given how big of an impact he has made in the Chiefs’ secondary.

Kansas City also has to make big improvements to its wide receiver depth chart.

Even with the emergence of rookie Rashee Rice in 2023, Chiefs wide receivers led the NFL in dropped balls and were a season-long concern. With tight end Travis Kelce coming back another year old and not many reliable targets around him and Rice the Chiefs should be making that a huge offseason priority.

With Mahomes’ most recent restructuring, they might have a chance to do that. It just might help them do something no NFL team has ever done before — win three consecutive Super Bowls.
