According to Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas, all Kansas City Chiefs “players, coaches, and staff are accounted for” following the mass shooting during their Super Bowl parade on Valentine’s Day. Lucas stated during a news conference that she spoke with the organization.

“We went out today like everyone in Kansas City, looking to have a celebration,” Lucas told reporters. “A shooting occurred today, which ruined the festivities. This is an extraordinarily tragic event that we would never have predicted in Kansas City and will remember for a long time.

Lucas declined to say whether any Chiefs players were in danger, but did say that “a number of us had to flee from a situation because we heard the sound of gunshots.” Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves confirmed one person was killed and there are 21 others who were wounded. Police apprehended three suspects.

“I’m angry at what happened today,” Graves said. “The people who came to this celebration should expect a safe environment… This tragedy occurred even in the presence of uniformed law enforcement officers.” The gunshot occurred as the Super Bowl procession was closing up and the throng was leaving the area.

Several march participants expressed thoughts and sympathies for the city and those injured. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes tweeted that he is “praying for Kansas City” and included multiple prayer hand emojis. Mahomes won his third Super Bowl MVP award on Sunday, in Super Bowl 58.

“Please join me in praying for the victims of this horrific atrocity. “Pray that doctors and first responders have steady hands and that everyone experiences complete healing,” colleague Dru Tranquill wrote.
