King Charles sent Prince William and Harry to one of the most prominent private schools in the country which has seen multiple future leaders pass through its doors including David Cameron and Boris Johnson

Prince William and Harry attended Eton College when they were young and there is said to be a heartbreaking reason behind the decision.

King Charles opted to send his children to Eton, which is one of the the most prominent and expensive private schools in the country. It describes itself as a “modern forward-thinking school” and has seen multiple future leaders pass through its doors including David Cameron and Boris Johnson. However, the decision behind to send William and Harry there rather than another boarding school is a rather heartbreaking one. The King had attended Gordonstoun as a young boy, which was a Scottish boarding school. His father, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh sent him there having previously attended and loved it.

But despite his dad enjoying his time there, the King did not share his father’s passion for the school as he was mercilessly bullied. He has previously branded the school “Colditz in kilts” and admitted staying there was like serving a “prison sentence.” This could have been a factor in the decision to send Prince William and Harry to Eton College instead. The Duke of Edinburgh could have sent his son to Eton but argued it was too close to Windsor and London and wanted Charles to have more privacy from the press in Scotland.

Part of the King’s dislike of Gordonstoun was covered in the popular Netflix programme The Crown which explored Charles’s time at the school. During season two, the TV series depicts him being isolated from the rest of the boys with one pupil asking him “do you think you’re better than us?” before pushing him into the river.
