Angel Reese press conference, explained: ‘Big Bang Theory’ mishap creates awkward moment with reporter

The WNBA has had some awkward press conference moments during its 2024 season, but one of the funniest ones so far occurred after Sunday’s Chicago Sky vs. Seattle Storm game.

Several Sky personnel met with reporters on Zoom after Chicago’s 84-71 loss to Seattle. One reporter tried to ask Angel Reese a question about her performance, during which she logged a record 13th consecutive double-double, but an unlikely source interrupted the reporter several times.

What was the source of the interruption? Some rather serious-sounding audio from the popular sitcom “The Big Bang Theory.”

Here’s what to know about Reese’s comical press conference.

Angel Reese press conference, explained

Reese’s news conference began with a reporter attempting to ask the rookie a question about her record double-double streak continuing. However, the reporter was interrupted by a female voice, who said, “Are we ever going to have an intimate relationship?”

Reese, who was mildly confused, responded, saying, “I’m sorry, the last part cut off.”

Then came a response from a male voice, who said, “Oh my, that’s an uncomfortable topic.”

At that point, Reese — along with her teammate Marina Mabrey and coach Teresa Weatherspoon — appeared confused.

“Excuse me?” she asked, as those running the media availability attempted to clarify the question.

That was followed by a line that shocked Reese and Mabrey, who appeared to be trying not to laugh.

“I never had any interest in being intimate with anyone,” the male voice said.

After that, the rogue audio cut out, and the news conference continued.

It’s easy to understand why the Sky thought they had awkwardly stumbled upon a private and personal conversation. In reality, they were hearing audio from an episode of “The Big Bang Theory” that had inadvertently been funneled into the Zoom call by Chicago TV station WGN, as reported by the Chicago Tribune’s Julia Poe.

In the scene — from the 23rd episode of season six, “The Love Spell Potential” — Amy Farrah Fowler (portrayed by Mayim Bialik) is having a serious discussion with her long-time boyfriend, Sheldon Cooper (played by Jim Parsons).

Amy questions whether she will get what she wants from her relationship with Sheldon. Eventually, Sheldon admits he has “not ruled out” being intimate with Amy, despite his apprehensions about the topic, marking a big moment — and stepping stone — in their relationship.

Audiences typically view the moment as heartwarming, vulnerable and comical, as Amy responds to Sheldon’s declaration by saying, “Wow, talk dirty to me.”

Unfortunately, Reese and Co. didn’t get to hear the end of the scene, so they didn’t immediately know the scene’s touching conclusion.

Still, the Sky will settle for the laughs they got out of the unusual news conference gaffe.
