Scarlett Johansson is one of the most beloved celebrities among all of the people in the entertainment industry, and rightly so: She doesn’t shy away from criticism nor from speaking against what’s wrong. In fact, she might even be labeled as her own biggest critic, considering how intricately she judges her work and corrects her mistakes.

However, despite being an incredibly famous, loved, and commended actor, Scarlett Johansson, too, has faced one major struggle that has constantly terrified her for years ever since her inception in the industry. But even that struggle has contributed drastically to her immensely appreciated on-screen performances, turning out as a blessing in disguise.

While Scarlett Johansson is pretty much perfect with her most accurate combination of wit, humor, charm, and amiability, that’s not how she looks at herself. She is not only her own biggest critic but a self-deprecating actress as well: which is one of the biggest struggles she faced throughout her career.

Talking to Charlie Rose in an interview with FilMagicians conducted back in 2003, the Black Widow star revealed how she has struggled a lot in the industry because of her own critiques of herself.

“It’s hard when you’re presenting with ‘How’d you get so good’ because I don’t think that,” Johansson shared. “I’m this self-deprecating actor. Like, what’s with me? I constantly struggle with the stuff I do. I still see scenes in films that I’ve done and go, ‘God, why did I make that choice?’ or ‘Why did they use that take?’ and, you know, ‘What’s wrong with the intonation of my voice?’ and all that.”

She further went on to explain how pressurizing it is when one truly becomes successful. She said,

“I think it’s interesting that the more films that you make that are successful, the more there is a certain pressure on you to keep making great films and keep being fantastic in them. That’s a sort of a scary thing.”

Yet, despite her criticism and self-pressure to do better every time for herself has made her struggle, it has also made Scarlett Johansson a better star in many ways.

Scarlett Johansson’s Criticism For Herself Is A Blessing In Disguise As Well

Continuing in the interview with FilMagicians, Scarlett Johansson then went on to divulge how a certain drive and criticism for yourself pushes you to perform at your utter best, thus, turning out as a blessing in disguise.

“On the other hand, when you’re just starting out, you want to be amazing, and you want to get noticed,” Johansson said. “That’s a certain drive that you have.”

Furthermore, the Lucy star also addressed the attributes studded to success and recognition and how her constant evaluation of herself helps make her a better version of herself.

“I think that there’s a certain jaded quality that comes with success and recognition. So, of course, I’m constantly learning every experience that I have working on and off-set. But I [also] constantly struggle with whether I’m becoming jaded or whether I’m able to step outside of what I’m doing and kind of have a look in. I think that tunnel vision gets narrower and narrower the more and more you work.”

Her constant retrospection of herself and all of her works has indeed transformed Scarlett Johansson into a brilliant young actress who can excel at anything and everything.
