With an overall 4.1 rating out of 5, Black Widow became another one of MCU’s comic-based super hit movies. Initially, the movie was supposed to be directed by the Argentinian director, Lucrecia Martel.

However, Martel bailed out from directing the movie when she was asked to focus more on the character played by Scarlett Johansson rather than the fight scenes from the comic book. She also revealed how she never got around to seeing Black Widow either, even when she wanted to. The director said,

“No, no, no — I didn’t see ‘Black Widow.’ I tried to. They contacted a great number of female directors. I never would have imagined that Marvel could contact and bring together a pool of directors and I would be a part of it; I never thought that would be possible. I would have loved to make a film with them but I would have had to provide something that I would like to see in that world.”

All in all, Martel didn’t want to take up the project and direct Black Widow as she felt ‘turned off’ by Marvel’s offer.

As it turns out, this series of Lucrecia Martel refusing to direct and not watching Black Widow didn’t just end there. The Argentinian director furthermore went ahead to criticize MCU for its choice of songs for the movies, calling them ‘ugly’ and ‘horrible’. Martel said,

“It turns out some of the Marvel films are available on planes so I’ve seen a few. I find the sound in them is absolutely in very poor taste, the visual effects and the sound of the effects…It’s the selection of the sounds that they’re connecting to the effects, which is actually very ugly. And the way the music is used is actually horrible.”

After Martel was done criticizing and bailing out on directing Black Widow, the movie was then offered to Cate Shortland, who ended up directing the Scarlett Johansson starrer $379M grossing Marvel movie.
