Sheryl Swoopes’ Unexpected Admission About WNBA Finals Is Turning Heads

In this story:

Sunday’s WNBA Finals Game 5 showdown resulted in New York Liberty fans celebrating their team’s first-ever championship. On the other end of the spectrum are the Minnesota Lynx and their supporters, who heartbreakingly lost out on the opportunity to lift another title.

One WNBA personality who had mixed feelings about the result of Sunday’s contest, however, is Hall of Fame forward Sheryl Swoopes. In the most recent episode of Gilbert Arenas’ “Gil’s Arena” podcast, the three-time WNBA MVP explained why she was pretty much rooting for both teams to lose in the Finals.

“I’m happy for them,” she started. “But I never want New York to win anything. That’s the competitor in me. When I played, it was like [Houston] Comets and New York. So I never wanted them to win.”

Swoopes then went on to admit that she did not want the Lynx to win either.

“But the other side is I’m glad they did because I also didn’t want Minnesota to be the first team to win five [championships],” Swoopes continued. “Because we had four, right? I don’t need them to get five.”

Swoopes, who has earned quite the reputation for being a Caitlin Clark naysayer of late, once again made waves with her unexpected reaction to the WNBA Finals. More than a few fans took notice of the four-time champ’s revelation, and for the most part, the mean streets of X weren’t too pleased with Swoopes and her statement.

“Hater of the year right here,” a comment read.

“I listened a few episodes of her podcast and I think this is kinda just her vibe. She messy, I sorta think CC FC misjudged her as hating CC specifically when she is messy about everyone,” a viewer said.

“She a generational hater but I understand where she’s coming from,” reacted another.

Other WNBA supporters, however, were able to empathize with Swoopes here.

“I can actually respect this type of hating lol. No lies, just pure hating on everything that isn’t the Comets. Fair enough,” stated a user.

“I defend her on this and only this. The Houston comets vs. the Liberty was that big of a rivalry 😂” pointed out another.

“😆 🤣 😂 I enjoy her. Her rationale makes perfect sense to me. A professional hater with status & influence is great for the W. She’s growing on me. 😆” a viewer wrote.

Based on these comments alone, it is safe to say that Sheryl Swoopes has successfully established herself as one of the most polarizing figures in the league today.
