ESPN star’s Aпgel Reese Rookie of the Year pick explaпatioп draws backlash
Clark and Reese have both emerged as top rookies in the league.
ESPN pundit Monica McNutt faced some pushback when explaining why Angel Reese was chosen as WNBA Rookie of the Year instead of Caitlin Clark.
“My Rookie of the Year will be based on the standings because I think that’s how you have to measure it,” McNutt said. “Measuring impact. And the Sky are in the playoffs now, so, in my opinion, you have to nod first to Angel Reese.” McNutt also highlighted Reese’s double-double record of 11 while speaking on the show ESPN. She also noted that the team lacked All-Stars when Reese was selected.
When she arrived in Indiana, McNutt said the Fever already had a foundation. Aliyah Boston, the number 1 pick of the previous season and the 2023 WNBA Rookie of the Year, and Kelsey Mitchell, who averaged almost 20 points per game, were already established players.
However, fans tuned in to the WNBA this season because of Clark and Reese, and many disagreed with McNutt’s arguments, expressing their opinions on social media.
Since McNutt’s comments, Clark has become the first WNBA rookie to record a triple-double, while Reese extended her double-double streak to 12 games.
As of Sunday, both teams were in the top eight in the WNBA standings and are expected to make it to the knockout round.
