Taylor Swift is one of the most popular artists in the world, and like any other celebrity, she has had her fair share of high-profile relationships. While some of the men she dated were already famous, some became famous due to their relationship with her. She happens to have bad blood with some of her ex-lovers as her relationships with them went down in flames.

Taylor Swift has a huge discography so it’s not very uncommon for one of her songs to be used in a series or movie. Her ex-boyfriend John Mayer is also not an exception to such occurrences. In a recent podcast episode, actresses Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey revealed how they acquired the right to use one of Mayer’s songs in the NBC series The Office.

John Mayer Had a Strange Demand

Jenna Fischer who played secretary Pam Beesly and Angela Kinsey who played accountant Angela Martin in The Office, discuss their experience of starring in the show in the podcast Office Ladies. In one of the recent episodes of this podcast, it was revealed how they got the rights to include one of John Mayer’s Your Body is a Wonderland in the episode A Benihana Christmas, which is episodes 10 and 11 of season 3 of the show.

John Mayer was reluctant at first but had a change of mind later which he mentioned in a blog post about this whole thing. In the post, he pointed out that while he is not sorry for any of his work, but he is not often asked if he would allow a movie or show to use Your Body is a Wonderland. According to Fisher, in the post, Mayer wrote:
I don’t get asked to use “Wonderland” for strongman competitions and documentaries about aircraft carriers. I usually get asked so that people can goof on it. So I initially turned down their request. But after thinking about it, I decided to go for it. But with one stipulation.
The condition under which John Mayer agreed to let The Office use his song was that he would be given a Dundie which is an award that Steve Carell’s character Michael Scott annually gives from Dunder Mifflin Scranton to the employees for their outstanding performance. Mayer got the award from B. J. Novak for being the ‘Tallest Music Dude’.

Taylor Swift has made peace with some of her ex-boyfriends over the years. Popstar Harry Styles and actor Taylor Lautner are two of them. John Mayer happens to be the most controversial ex-boyfriend of Taylor Swift. So much so, that she wrote a song about him in her album Speak Now.

Jenna Fischer said that they wanted to use John Mayer’s song, and so The Office‘s director/writer/producer B. J. Novak who played the character of Ryan talked to Mayer about it as the two of them were friends. At first, the Free Fallin’ singer straight-up refused.

In a turn of events, the song actually ended up being used in the episode. Michael (Steve Carell) and Andy (Ed Helms) sang the song to a couple of waitresses that they had picked during their dinner at the Benihana restaurant where they had gone with their friends to cheer Michael after his breakup with Carol (Nancy Walls).
