The Iowa Hawkeyes and South Carolina fiercely clashed in the national championship game of the NCAA women’s basketball.

While the game was the pinnacle of collegiate women’s basketball, it’s just one sport. However, it seems that some are struggling to remember that. Certain sports fans’ overemphasis on sports has become a serious issue, particularly in today’s era of social media.

Ahead of the game this past weekend, things seemed to have gone too far, as Iowa superstar Gabbie Marshall was forced to delete her social media accounts due to receiving numerous threats after the Hawkeyes’ victory over UConn in the final. Surely, those words made her feel saddened and under immense pressure, leading her to make this decision.

For those who missed it, the Hawkeyes defeated the Huskies with a controversial foul at the end of the game. With just four seconds left and Iowa leading by one, Marshall was able to commit an offensive foul against Aaliyah Edwards, essentially sealing the victory for the Hawkeyes.

Some college basketball fans believe they have evidence proving the Iowa-UConn game was “rigged.”

Speaking to reporters before the championship game, Gabbie Marshall revealed that she received a lot of hateful comments on social media, forcing her to delete her accounts to focus on the task at hand.
