On August 5, the women’s gymnastics competitions concluded at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, with American gymnast Jordan Chiles securing a bronze medal in the floor exercise.
However, nearly a week later, Chiles may be forced to return her medal following a controversial scoring issue. The final score for Chiles was adjusted to 13.66, placing her behind Romanian gymnasts Ana Maria Barbosu and Sabrina Maneca-Voinea. The adjustment occurred because Chiles’ appeal to increase her score was submitted late and should not have been considered.
In response, the Romanian Gymnastics Federation filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport to address the scoring dispute and potentially award the medal to Romania.
USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee issued a statement expressing their disappointment with the ruling. They stated, “We are devastated by the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling regarding women’s floor exercise. The inquiry into the Difficulty Value of Jordan Chiles’ routine was filed in good faith and, we believed, in accordance with FIG rules to ensure accurate scoring.”
The outcome for Chiles and her medal remains uncertain, but a resolution is expected soon.
Regarding her future, Chiles has hinted at her plans for the 2028 Summer Olympics. In an interview with Access Hollywood, she shared, “It’s not a no, but it’s not a yes. Right now, I’m just soaking in every moment. With the medals I’ve already won, I’m still in awe. I have no words.”
Despite the potential loss of her bronze medal, Chiles remains hopeful about the 2028 Games, aiming to add to her impressive collection of gold and silver medals.
