In the second quarter, the 2023 No. 1 overall pick Wembanyama was called for fouling guard Josh Giddey as he was driving to the bucket.

The French star proceeded to bounce the ball into the air and was immediately given a technical foul by referee JB DeRosa.

Wembanyama first appeared to chuckle when he got T’d up.

But the 19-year-old then apologized to DeRosa for his error of judgment.

However, ESPN color commentator Stan Van Gundy didn’t agree with the technical foul call.

“I understand this is how they’re taught to call a technical foul, but all he did was try to bounce the ball hard and it got away,” the 64-year-old former NBA coach said during the game’s broadcast.

NBA fans agreed with Van Gundy’s argument on Wembanyama’s technical foul.

One stated: “That’s not even tech worthy.”

Another wrote: “These refs are ridiculous.”

A third added: “That has to be the worst call in history.”

The Spurs lost their sixth straight game and would drop to 3-8 for the season.

They are 0-2 so far during the In-Season Tournament.

Wembanyama scored eight points while recording a career-high 14 rebounds.

Prior to Tuesday’s game, the lengthy rookie averaged 19.7 points per game and 8.8 rebounds as well as 2.4 blocks.
