What to know about “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen
Originally written for his 1984 album Various Positions, “Hallelujah” has been covered by a wide range of artists, including Jeff Buckley, Rufus Wainwright, Susan Boyle, Kodi Lee, Jennifer Hudson, Pentatonix, Bob Dylan, K.D. Lang, Brandi Carlile, Willie Nelson, Chester Bennington, and more. Wainwright’s version in particular helped reintroduce the song to a global audience when it was featured on the Shrek soundtrack in 2001. After Cohen’s passing in 2016, his original version reached number 59 on the Billboard U.S. Hot 100.

Cohen himself once noted that he wrote around 80 verses before settling on the final lyrics. In a 2012 interview with The Guardian, he shared his feelings about the song’s widespread popularity: “I’m very happy that it’s being sung.”
