The royal family is currently in Balmoral, the casual Scottish castle they visit every summer, and apparently, today—August 12—is something called “The Glorious Twelfth.” I mean, to the rest of us it’s simply Monday, aka the worst day of the week, but sure.
So what is “The Glorious Twelfth,” you ask? It’s the opening of grouse-shooting season, which the royals are, for some reason, extremely into...despite the “sport” being controversial due to consisting of—to quote League Against Cruel Sports director Chris Luffingham in Newsweek—“shooting hundreds of birds at a time just for fun.”
As a friend of the royal family put it to the Daily Beast, “Balmoral is basically a very fancy Victorian hunting lodge. That is what you do up there: You go out shooting, you fish, and you have lunch in the hut. It is an important ritual for Kate and William to take their children there for the Glorious Twelfth and that is the goal this year.”

According to the outlet, Prince William and Kate Middleton are aiming to arrive at Balmoral on August 12 (so, today!) or shortly thereafter (so, this week!). Meanwhile, sources say Kate is focusing on her family and children in the months ahead, and so far there are no upcoming events scheduled.
“There is still nothing in her diary,” a Buckingham Palace insider told the Daily Beast. “My understanding is that people are going to have to get used to seeing a lot less of Kate. The priority for her now is going to be family and the children. The youngest of those kids, Louis, is only 6. Like a lot of people who have a brush with mortality, Kate is going to prioritize the things that matter to her from now on. In her case, that means her kids.”
