Candid: He sat down for a candid interview with Oprah Winfrey for the latest installment of The Oprah Conversation, which premiered on Apple TV+ Friday. And Will Smith revealed that he took the psychedelic plant based drug ayahuasca over 12 times during a retreat in Peru while having marital problems with wife Jada Pinkett Smith
Ayahuasca, or yage, contains Dimethyltryptamine, known as DMT; it comes from the stem bark of the vines Banisteriopsis caapi and B. inebrians.
Ayahuasca is a drink that is said to bring inner peace and have healing properties by purging toxins and can produce reactions including vomiting.
The experiences with the drug can last six to 10 hours and are guided by shamans in certain countries in South America, where is it legal to consume ayahuasca.
Will’s decision to try the drug took place while he was having marital problems with Jada, who revealed in 2020 she had an ‘entanglement’ with musician August Alsina for four years.
Will told Oprah during the interview: It’s about being able to find that contentment within yourself – not with external stimuli,’ per The Sun.
Adding: ‘The spiritual process is detoxing all of those things – not leaving your marriage so you can go get some chocolate cake. No. It’s no chocolate cake. It’s not alcohol,’ he told the outlet.
‘It’s no sexual stimulation and all of that… The spiritual process is more about detox than going to get more.’
In another teaser clip for the episode, Will told Oprah that he felt like he failed ‘every woman’ he interacted with.
‘I want to tell the truth. I want to let people have it. I’ve carried, most of life, the sense of failing every woman I interact with. I haven’t talked about that publicly.’
He had previously touched on taking Ayahuasca in his November GQ cover interview, revealing he’s done it over a dozen times even though he had never smoked weed and rarely drinks.
In 2020, Jada confirmed her affair with musician August Alsina.
The revealing conversation took place on Red Table Talk with Will; Jada and Will have been married since 1997.
Jada said she developed a friendship with August in 2016, but revealed she and Will were going through a ‘difficult time’ and had ‘basically broken up’.
The shocking confessional came after both actors initially denied August’s claims that Will gave him his blessing to have a relationship with Jada.
Following Jada’s confession Will admitted: ‘I was done with you,’ while Jada added that they decided to separate for a ‘period of time’.
‘And then what did you do, Jada?’ Will asked, urging his wife to keep talking.
‘As time went on, I got into a different type of entanglement with August,’ Jada explained.
Will has been open about their marital struggles ahead of his memoir release.
During his GQ interview, Will said that he and Jada had a fight around her 40th birthday, where they both realized ‘it was a fantasy illusion that we could make each other happy.’
He told the outlet: ‘We agreed that she had to make herself happy and I had to make myself happy. Then we were going to present ourselves back to the relationship already happy – versus demanding that the other person fill our empty cup.’
The actor is set to release his memoir Will on November 9, 2021.
