Angel Reese makes strongly-worded statement about WNBA coach Teresa Weatherspoon

Angel Reese has come to the defense of her head coach.

Angel Reese has given her thoughts on Chicago Sky head coach Teresa Weatherspoon, who has helped the rookie adjust to the WNBA in her first few months as a professional women’s basketball player

Angel Reese has left no doubt that she would always have Chicago Sky head coach Teresa Weatherspoon’s back. The WNBA rookie posted to social media on Monday: “One thing I don’t play about is T-Spoon so let’s not even try it. that’s one thing i don’t tolerate like at all.”

Reese credits Weatherspoon for being an instrumental part of her adjustment to the WNBA, the young forward appreciating her desire to let players be themselves. Freedom of expression is particularly important for Reese, who may have dropped in the 2024 WNBA Draft because of concerns from rival executives about her personality.

So, Reese has made it clear that she will not keep quiet when she sees criticism of Weatherspoon. While Reese didn’t single out any specific person in Monday’s social media post, it seems she saw something negative said about Weatherspoon following a weekend loss to the Seattle Storm.

On Sunday, Reese enjoyed another personal success, securing her 13th consecutive double-double to set a new WNBA record. The WNBA newcomer, picked No. 7 overall by the Sky, enters the second week of July averaging 14.1 points and 11.9 rebounds per contest.

At every turn this season, Weatherspoon has publicly lavished Reese with praise, so it’s little surprise that Reese would return the favor.

When Reese caught public flak for attending the Met Gala – a personal dream – during the WNBA preseason, Weatherspoon hit back. “I hope you all recognize who you’re talking to,” the coach told reporters at the time. “A young lady who understands how to prioritize. She knows what she wants to do. She knows how it has to be done. She recognizes that the world, the eyes are upon her. But what I like the most is she remains who she is. She doesn’t allow anything to change who she is.”
