Audio Dispatch
Our planned audio format: field interviews, essays and transcripts.Last updated: Oct 1, 2026
Audio Dispatch is a format we plan to create. There are no episodes yet, no recordings and no feed on any platform. This page explains the idea so you can follow along, and the player shown on the homepage and below is a placeholder that does not play any audio.
What it will be
We imagine short audio pieces made for people who like to listen while walking, cooking or commuting: field conversations with makers, audio essays on a single idea and occasional behind-the-scenes notes from the desk. Each would be a companion to written work, not a replacement for it.
Transcripts first
Every episode would come with a complete transcript on the site. That serves readers who cannot or prefer not to listen, helps search, and makes quotations easy to check. We would design for the transcript before the audio, so that nobody is excluded.
The pilot idea
Our first concept is a conversation about the independent type-design scene: revived grotesques, variable fonts and the licensing questions that follow. A written illustrative profile on the subject is already on the site. The audio version has not been recorded, and no guests have been confirmed, so we mention the idea only as a plan.
Who would make it
The format would be led by the Audio & Field desk, represented on the site by the pen name Liam Wong, as explained on The Masthead. As the launch edition grows, we hope to work with real producers and hosts, who would be credited by name.
What we need to get right
- Consent: recording people only with their clear permission, and letting them review how they are described.
- Sound quality: clear, honest audio recorded with simple, reliable equipment.
- Accuracy: checking claims made in conversation and correcting them where needed.
- Sponsorship: if any appears, it will be announced clearly and kept separate.
Where you will find it
We have not chosen distribution platforms and will not list any until episodes exist. When audio is available, it will be announced on this page, and the website will host the files directly alongside the transcripts. Until then, the written stories and the RSS feed are the best way to follow our work.
A placeholder player
The play button below is a visual placeholder. Pressing it only shows a short message.
